Capacity Building Needs Assessment

Capacity Building Needs Assessment (CBNA) involves evaluation of operating systems and human resources of a microfinance institution. This process results in the identification of strengths and weaknesses. This step is followed by prioritisation of areas that need capacity building. CBNA Report, the key deliverable, details areas of improvement across MFI operations and recommends the appropriate media for capacity building.

Methodology
The assessment involves evaluation of MFI's abilities in relation to the following operating aspects.

Setting up basic operating systems

Loan appraisal, documentation and record keeping
Accounting
Cash and financial planning (especially budgetary planning)
Portfolio management - disbursal, collections, tracking of overdues and diversification
Management information systems
Internal control and audit
Members and group promotion and development
Fund mobilization
Leadership and strategic planning
Scalability

Course Methodologies - Adult Education Orientation

Pedagogy and tools
EDA courses incorporate tested approaches appropriate for adult education. Training sessions are designed to provide structured opportunities to participants to apply and practice new techniques and internalise new attitudes. The approach is interactive with extensive use of group discussions and flip charts supported by overheads and handouts. Different techniques such as case studies, role-plays, debates and group exercises provide variety and facilitate experiential and shared learning.

The Approach
This approach to learning is consistent with the mature learner's motivations and perspective. It makes use of the experiential learning cycle. The experiential approach is learner-centric and allows the individual participants to manage and share responsibility for their learning with their teachers. The training strategy provides opportunities for a person to engage in an activity, review this activity critically, draw some useful insights from the analysis, and apply the result in a practical situation. It thereby enhances retention of newly learnt ideas and provides a strong basis for application when participants return to their working environment. This approach is consistent with the mature learner's motivations and perspective.

Size of the batch
The courses are conducted in English and participation is restricted to a maximum of twenty-five persons
